Following is an outline of our session structure and the activities children participate in.

Free Play Activities

During Free Play time our children are offered a diverse array of activities to choose from. Some of the many choices are:

Craft
Play dough
Computers
Collage, sticking and gluing
Dress-ups / Family Play
Story Corner
Puzzles & Games
Building blocks, cars and trains
Climbing frames, swings and outdoor equipment
Sandpit
Outside Carpentry
Water play
Painting

Music Time

At this time all our children come together to discover the joys of music, song, movement and dance. During Music Time the children are exposed to different musical instruments, live and recorded music, classic children’s nursery rhymes and songs. We also discuss classical composers and hear their music. Add to this some lively dance steps taught by our teachers and our children have a wonderful foundation in music and rhythm.

Group 2: Pre-Literacy, Numeracy & Listening Skills

When children start morning sessions they take part in Group 2 once per week. Group 2 is a small group based activity lead by a teacher. In this small group environment, children participate with a teacher in an activity focusing on oral language development, group participation, listening skills, pre-reading skills, numeracy skills and art. This work is filed in the children’s personal portfolio for you to see and discuss with your child.

Big Peoples: Transition to School Programme

“Big Peoples” is a group activity designed to prepare children for school. Just before children start school they take part in this teacher lead group. The teacher directs and helps children with drawing and writing activities to develop listening skills, pre-reading skills, mathematics skills, art and language. The children record their work in a "Big Peoples" book to take home when they leave kindergarten for school.

Mat Time for 4-5 year olds ( Morning Session) : Learning the Alphabet

Towards the end of the session all our children come together for a story and to develop awareness of the alphabet. Each week a different letter of the alphabet is promoted. Children are encouraged to draw a picture to bring into kindergarten that begins with the letter of the alphabet that is the week's focus. In this activity children are encouraged to introduce themselves and speak in front of the group about the picture they have drawn and comprehend what initial letter it begins with. This activity also helps to develop self-confidence from speaking in front of their peers.

Group Story Time for 3-4 year olds (Afternoon Session) : Stories, Pre-Literacy & Numeracy

At Story time all our children come together and sit as a group to develop the children’s pre-literacy and numeracy skills. At this time the children listen to stories and learn rhymes and songs such as the “ABC” song and “Five Brown Buns”. These activities also teach the children listening skills and how to cooperate as part of a group.

Morning Tea and Afternoon Tea

All children bring their own healthy Morning or Afternoon Tea. Water is supplied by the kindergarten and available throughout the session. Prior to Morning and Afternoon Tea the children go to the toilet and wash their hands.

Tidy Up Time

All children are encouraged to help tidy up the kindergarten.
